April 30 Altered Books

from 65.00

Date: Sunday, April 30, 1pm-4pm
Location: 817 Davis Street #110
Instructor: Lisa Huffaker

An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning.

How often are we told NOT to touch works of art?  But an artist's book is something special:  an artwork made by hand, to be held and enjoyed in our hands. In this workshop, we will transform paper sample books into mixed-media artist's books.  We will respond to the beautiful papers in the books, using collage, drawing, watercolors, cutting, and any other means we might dream up!  We will explore automatic drawing, and keep our art playful and spontaneous by inviting found materials, happy accidents, and even each other's mark-making into our books.  Each participant will leave with a unique book, full of rich colors, layered textures and delicious surfaces -- in a form that reveals peepholes and surprises with each turn of the page.

Lisa Huffaker is a poet, musician, visual artist, and teacher, who channels her wide range of abilities into ambitious efforts with a focus on community and interaction.  Her latest project, White Rock Zine Machine, offers tiny handmade books by local poets and artists, sold in beautifully re-purposed vending machines.  Lisa is an award-winning poet whose work is published in such journals as Southwest Review, Poet Lore, Able Muse, and many more.  She teaches creative writing and zine making through the Writer’s Garret, and presents monthly creative writing adventures at the Nasher Sculpture Center.  Her Zine Camp at Oil and Cotton won a “Best of Dallas” award from the Dallas Observer.  Lisa is a classical singer by training, and sings with the Dallas Opera.  This July through September, she will be the visiting artist in the C3 Gallery at the Dallas Museum of Art. www.whiterockzinemachine.com
