Feb 12 and 19 Intro to Traditional Egg Tempera Painting

Sundays, February 12 and 19, 11-3pm, 2 Week Series*
Location: 817 W. Davis Street #110
Instructor: Laura Hartman

Painting with pigment and egg yolk was a favored technique of the early Italian Renaissance. Egg tempera paintings exhibit luminous, soft surfaces. The technique evolved and has been used and interpreted by contemporary artists such as Thomas Hart Benton and notably Andrew Wyeth.

During this course you will make traditional gesso and prepare a wood panel, learn about underdrawing techniques and prepare an underdrawing, make egg tempera paint and learn to apply it with traditional techniques.

The class will be structured as follows:
1) Introduction lecture
2) Make rabbit skin glue and gesso
3) Apply gesso
4) Break and lecture on underdrawing
5) Sand gesso
6) Prepare cartoon
7) Apply drawing
8) Break and lecture on egg tempera history
9) Prepare egg tempera paint
10) Paint

All students will be supplied with: wood panel support, gesso, sandpaper, tracing paper, charcoal, brush, egg, pigment, pallet

Laura Eva Hartman is a Paintings Conservator at the Dallas Museum of Art. She earned her Masters of Science Degree from the University of Delaware/Winterthur Program in Art Conservation. During her training in conservation she participated in the Kress Reconstruction Project, focused on creating historically accurate reconstructions of paintings. She has a specific interest in artist’s materials and techniques, working with these in her own painting practice.
