Oct 13 - Nov 17 Intro to Textiles 6 Week Series

Thursdays, Oct 13 to Nov 17,  7pm-9pm, 6 Week Series*
Location: 817 W. Davis Street #110
Instructors: Analise Minjarez & Sarita Westrup

In this 6 week Intro to Textiles course students will explore two 2D techniques and two 3D techniques through explorations and samples. All materials will be provided by the instructors to create samples. 

At the end of the fourth week students will use what they learned to complete a work of textile art. Students are encouraged to bring materials to work on for their final piece or use special Oil and Cotton material donations. Instructors will aid students in making their completed artworks gallery ready to be featured in an exhibition at Oil and Cotton. Participants are welcomed to invite friends and family to celebrate what they have learn at the exhibition reception. Drinks and snacks will be served! 

Week One : Tapestry Weaving  - Learn basic tapestry weaving techniques such as dove tails, single weft interlock, diagonals shapes, and how to use twining techniques to create vertical strips, diagonal lines, and dots. 

Week Two: Netting - Learn the versatile technique of knotted netting while using tools such as a netting shuttle and a gauge to create off the loom open work textiles.

Week Three: 3D Wet Felting - Learn how to transform fluffy light weight merino wool into semi-solid felted three dimensional forms using hot water and friction. 

Week Four: Basketry - Learn how to make a three dimensional form usingthe twining technique with waxed linen and hemp cord. We will explore how to make closed bottoms, open bottom basket, and how to finish the lip of a basket.  

Week Five: Begin final project- Choose one or two techniques to use in your finished work of art.

Week Six: Work on final project

Saturday, Nov 18:  Exhibition of your final work of art at Oil and Cotton!!
