Intro to Textiles : 6 Week Spring Series

Dates: Tuesdays, March 21 - April 25
Time:  7pm-9pm (2hrs)
Min/ Max Students: 8
Instructors:  Tierra Firme - Sarita Westrup & Analise Minjarez

In this 6 week Intro to Textiles course students will explore three 2D techniques and one 3D technique through explorations and samples. All materials will be provided by the instructors to create samples. 

At the end of the fourth week students will use what they learned to complete a work of textile art. Students are encouraged to bring materials or use Oil and Cotton's supplies for their final piece. Instructors will aid students in making their completed artworks gallery-ready to be featured in an exhibition at Oil and Cotton. Participants are welcomed to invite friends and family to celebrate with them at the exhibition reception. Drinks and snacks will be served! 

Week One : Shibori - A Japanese term for several methods of dyeing cloth with a pattern by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, compressing, or capping. Participants will focus on exploring four stitching techniques on cloth and dye with indigo.  

Week Two: Block Printing – Explore how to create graphic repeat patterns on cloth. Students will learn how to carve an image from a rubber block as well as how to print using screen printing inks.

 Week Three: Silk Painting – Learn how to use synthetic dyes to paint images on silk cloth. Students will lean how to prep the silk surface for painting and explore basic silk painting techniques and materials such as resist paste, salt, and alcohol.

Week Four: Basketry - Learn how to make a three dimensional form using the coiling technique with cotton cord and yarn. We will explore how to make closed bottoms, open bottom basket, and how to finish the lip of a basket.  

Week Five: Begin final project- Choose one or two techniques to use in your finished work of art.

Week Six: Work on final project/ In class critique

Saturday, April 29 :  Exhibition of your final work of art at Oil and Cotton!
