In this class students will learn the magic of dyeing with the Dia de los Muertos ceremonial offering, the marigold flower. Historically, marigolds were used to achieve rich warm yellows and deep dark greens. Participants will explore painting designs on cotton with invisible thickened mordants the first night and dyeing with marigold flowers the second. The bright yellow flower, which resembles the sun, are said to help the spirits find their way back to the human world. Every one will dye and design two 17”x17” handkerchiefs inspired by Dia de los Muertos iconography. Please bring two drawings or reference images that you want to paint!
