This workshop will explore the use of thicken natural dye pastes on silk. Learn how to prepare your cloth with tannins and mix your own thickened dyes from natural plant materials such as logwood, cochineal, marigold flowers, and cutch with guar gum and alum. All participants will learn the basics of natural dyes, how to extract color, what are mordants, and how to use them to alter hues with additives such as iron, and citric acid. Participants will be introduced to basic silk painting techniques and the class will be looking at natural specimens for design inspiration. Each student will receive a 35"x35" hemmed silk piece to explore the technique.
